Decks: How to build your own deck

custom deck design

It’s been almost a year now, since the last time I built a deck.

I’ve built a total of three decks around each of my homes, so far. I really don’t think I’ll need a deck on my latest home, with the main reason, I won’t have the space that needs a deck.

As far as building a deck is concerned, You really only need a few basic handyman skills.

You’ll need to know How-To use the common deck building skills

  • Use a Tape Measure
  • Use Hand Tools
  • Use a Circular Saw
  • Do Basic Electrical Wiring (only if you want deck lighting)
  • Pen or computer to Sketch a Plan of your deck idea

You’ll need some Basic Deck Structural Knowledge

  • Make sure to have a ground supporting post at least every 3 1/2 feet apart (this is a framing part of the structure that will be below the decking)
  • Structural ground posts must be concreted into the ground at least 1 1/2 feet and attached to the concrete (there are many methods)
  • Framing of the deck will require joists which should be placed no further than 24 inches apart

I have a few Video Slideshows below, in order to get you familiar with basic deck-building knowledge, as well as giving you some ideas for creating and building your own deck.
